PHOEBE MADE A visual sweep of the barn’s interior. Not a chair out of place. Not a brown poinsettia leaf in sight. Granted, the Christmas tree had passed its point of peak freshness—another trip to the nursery was in her near future—but it wasn’t so dried out anyone would notice in the dim candlelight. Twenty guests would be attending tonight’s wedding. Each one of them would be carrying a candle, the only illumination other than the candles on the altar table.

Very romantic. Phoebe couldn’t wait to see the effect. And so appropriate for an intimate holiday wedding. She’d heard the groom would be wearing a dark green suit and the bride a red dress. Wasn’t the color red considered good luck in some cultures? She’d also be carrying a small bouquet made from evergreens. A lovely added detail, and Phoebe approved.

Satisfied all was in order, she started across the room. As she passed the open door, she spotted Cash with the horses by the hitching post. He’d brought both Elvis and Otis—she should have seen that coming. The old horses were connected at the hip; one didn’t go anywhere without the other.

Phoebe smiled. Her worries had eased a little during the phone call with Laurel earlier. She’d hated postponing telling her best friend about her pregnant sister’s serious health condition. Under any other circumstances, Laurel would have been Phoebe’s go-to confidante and sounding board.

Staying on at Wishing Well Springs was the best decision, though she’d debated the pros and cons for days—Cash being one of the cons. Even though they’d agreed their first kiss would also be their last, it still wasn’t easy working alongside him. Knowing what it was like to be held in his strong arms and have his lips take possession of hers had only increased her feelings for him.

In the end, though, she’d chosen to stay. She’d made a commitment to both Cash and Laurel. If she left, she wouldn’t be just an employee quitting, she’d be severing a successful partnership. A move that could put Wishing Well Springs in jeopardy. Not to toot her own horn, but replacing her would be no minor task.

Perhaps most important, she loved her job. She’d grown up at the inn and wouldn’t loathe replacing Trudy. But neither would she experience the satisfaction and pure happiness she got from being a wedding coordinator. Every morning Phoebe walked into the office excited about the day ahead. Giving that up wouldn’t have been easy. Trudy understood, and had encouraged Phoebe to follow her heart.

She was searching for the butane torch to light the candles when she once more passed by the open barn door. Oh good, she thought, the wedding party had arrived. The bride and her son were with Cash and the horses, the two adults talking.

Phoebe peered past them. Where was the photographer and why weren’t they taking pictures? That was the whole purpose of having the horses there.

Maybe they hadn’t started yet. Except... She halted. Was Cash frowning? Yes, and the bride looked poised to flee.
